Maryvale

Catholic Primary School

  • With our mother Mary,
  • we gather together joyfully,
  • to love, live, learn and pray,
  • with respect for all God’s family,
  • as Jesus teaches us.

Intent

Our vision for reading at Maryvale, is to ensure reading is at the centre of the whole curriculum. Our aim is that every pupil will learn to read fluently and confidently, regardless of their background, needs or abilities. Our reading curriculum enables children to become proficient, fluent readers who develop an enjoyment and appreciation of books, giving them the confidence and skills to succeed.

Early Reading and Phonics

In EYFS and KS1, pupils are taught phonics each morning, four times a week, following the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme.  Children are assessed and grouped accordingly every half term.

Resources to support phonics at home can be found here: https://www.maryvaleprimary.org.uk/phonics-extra-practice-and-games/

Home Reading Expectations in Reception and KS1

Children will take home an RWI phonic reading book/sound pack that they have read the previous week in their phonic lessons.  The book will be decodable and children should be able to read it fluently and independently.  We urge parents to use the same strategies shared in parent workshops to help their child to read.  Children may also bring a second book home - this a reading for pleasure book and should be shared with an adult/older sibling (children are not expected to be able to read this independently). Depending on the stage of your child's reading, their book/sounds will be changed at LEAST once a week.  In addition to home reading books, parents will also receive links/QR codes to online RWI videos.

Once children have completed the RWI programme in KS1, they will then be assessed against the Oxford Reading Tree programme and given an appropriate levelled book.

Reading for Pleasure

Every class does DEAR (drop everything and read) daily to develop a love of reading for pleasure.

Resources (including staff reading stories) to support reading for pleasure at home can be found here: https://www.maryvaleprimary.org.uk/maryvale-are-readers/

Home Reading

Home reading is an expectation here at Maryvale.

The reading scheme we follow after children have completed the RWI phonics programme is Oxford Reading Tree.

Pupils are expected to keep reading records, these are yellow record books in KS1 and reading journals in KS2. All pupils also have a log in to Oxford Reading Buddy.
