Children in Year Five continue to build on their knowledge and understanding of relationships and staying safe. Year Five children also learn some basic first aid knowledge including the recovery position. To support the Year Five Science Curriculum children in Year Five will also build upon prior knowledge of puberty and learn how bodies change during this time. They will be taught to respect their bodies as it is a gift from God.
After consultation with staff, parents and governors, we have made the decision to teach children additional lessons such as: what to do if they see harmful images online and how a baby grows in its mother's womb and basic scientific facts about sexual intercourse between a man and woman (all of the above lessons are always shared with parents prior to them being taught and the right to withdraw is offered).
